The Simple Message Transport Protocol is the standard Internet protocol for sending mail.

While the SOAP standard does not specify an SMTP binding, it is certainly possible to send SOAP messages over SMTP. Because of it’s nature as a message delivery protocol, and because the Internet has a well defined store and forward infrastructure for it, SMTP makes the most sense for one-way message passing.
